Plateau Mirror / Contact (5 seconds) (2010)
Photographic print made by placing photographic paper in direct contact with
a computer screen, with exposure to the digital image of a portrait of the Belgian
physicist, Joseph Plateau. The original Daguerreotype portrait, from 1843, is the
last known photograph taken of Plateau before he lost his eyesight. Plateau believed
that his loss of sight was the result of a study he had previously conducted on the
subject of retinal afterimages, where he looked at the sun directly for 25 seconds.
