Plateau Mirror / Contact, 2010
Gelatin silver print made by placing photographic paper in direct contact with a computer screen and
exposed to the digital image of Belgian physicist, Joseph Plateau. The source image is a Daguerreotype
from 1843 – the last known photograph taken of Plateau before he lost his eyesight. Plateau believed
his blindness resulted from a study he conducted on the subject of retinal afterimages, in which
he looked at the sun directly for more than 25 seconds.
